We are all aware that developers at Canonical are currently sweating it hard on their upcoming major iteration Unity8 which is based on Mir display server targeting convergence.
The developers are regularly sifting through the packages that will stay and those that could be removed in the upcoming distribution : Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr
Currently the default Ubuntu desktop is shipped with Unity 7, and Canonical has now made it clear that Trusty Tahr will be shipped with Unity 7 and not Unity 8.
So Unity 7 stacks have now been upgraded in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
Mark Shuttleworth lays out the plans for Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 14.04.
It must be noted that the GTK-themes were using metacity theming engine through the compiz native gtk-window-decorator in earlier versions.
The new update includes features of full GTK3+ theming support and windows with anti-aliased corners.
Now the Canonical developers have redefined the entire theming system based on GtkStyleContext which is entirely based on CSS, in the latest upgrade of Unity7.
GTK3 support has better theming capabilities and gtk-css theming.
The new update brings full GTK3 theming support, improved resizing speed when using 'normal resizing' in compiz and also anti-aliased corner.
However, all the 'current' themes will stop working in upgraded Unity7, until the gtk-theme designer updates the codebase of gtk-theme to the newly updated theming system.
Canonical is skimming through the necessity of removing the Open JDK package in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
After reports emerged that Ubuntu distributions might implement the most recent version of GRUB.
